A fatal crash case remains set for February. 40-year-old Jason D. Hoover is charged in Elkhart County after a pickup truck struck a horse-drawn cart in February, killing two children and the pony. The Goshen News says two other children were seriously injured. Authorities allege Hoover was driving while intoxicated. At a pretrial conference, his attorney said Hoover intended to plead guilty but had questions about paperwork. His trial remains set for February 1.

A pursuit case is headed toward a February trial. The Goshen News says 37-year-old Jamarius Bryant is accused of driving into children and striking vehicles during police pursuits. Police say a pursuit in Elkhart began after a stolen rental vehicle was found in October 2025. Investigators allege the driver struck two children near a school bus stop. Bryant’s jury trial is set for February 15, with a status conference January 21.

Voter participation was strong across Michiana in Tuesday's midterm election, with early voting numbers showing a significant increase over four years ago. In St. Joseph County, nearly 30,000 people cast ballots before Election Day. That's roughly 8,000 more than in the 2022 midterms. A Nappanee man has admitted to arson. 21-year-old Christopher Hochstetler pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after admitting he tried to set his home on fire while his mother was inside. According to court documents, he used a candle lighter, toilet paper and logs throughout the house. The Goshen News says his mother woke up after the home’s fire alarm sounded. Hochstetler’s sentencing hearing is scheduled in county court for December 3.
