To the Editor:  In Woods Hole on the morning of July 31, I drove down Luscomb Road and turned onto Railroad Avenue just as vehicles were offloading the ferry from slip 3. I encountered a nonstop stream of traffic exiting the site onto Railroad Avenue. Not a single vehicle stopped at the two stop signs.

As the Steamship Authority (SSA) considers its ferry schedule for next year, an annual complaint has resurfaced: the 5:30 am boat.  This has been the earliest departure from Woods Hole via the Steamship for over a decade and carries a variety of shipments to the Island on trucks. It’s a critical element of the Island’s economy, especially in the summer when numerous businesses reopen for the season.

Older Islanders might soon receive help from the Steamship Authority (SSA) to get to their medical appointments in Boston.  On Tuesday, the Port Council unanimously approved providing a bus connection from Woods Hole to Sagamore for Vineyard seniors who need to get to Boston-area hospitals for medical appointments. The request came from the Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA), and details are still being discussed.
