FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — Nearly 600 Indiana Michigan Power customers were without electricity Friday as Fort Wayne experienced high heat and humidity. According to our partner in news, 21Alive, about 425 customers were without power in an area stretching from Hillegas and Goshen roads to East Washington Boulevard. A Goshen man has been sentenced in a child-neglect case. 35year-old Nick Hunsberger received a 14-year sentence after his conviction for neglect of a dependent resulting in serious injury. Six years were suspended. The case stems from the 2022 death of a two-week-old child. Court records say drugs and unsafe sleeping conditions contributed to the death. The child’s mother has pleaded guilty and will be sentenced Sep.17.

A new 65,000-square-foot testing facility is now open in Elkhart, bringing several operations under one roof. ICC Evaluation Services tests construction materials and vehicles, including RVs and ambulances, to see how they hold up under real-world conditions. A 17-year-old bicyclist was injured in a crash just outside Goshen. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office says it happened earlier this week County Roads 38 and 31. Investigators say the bicyclist moved into a turn lane in front of a Nissan, causing the vehicle to strike the bike and eject the rider. The teen was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with a head laceration and cuts to his arms. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

  39-year-old Jonathan Rodriguez has been sentenced after a jury found him guilty of dealing methamphetamine.  Police arrested Rodriguez during a traffic stop in Elkhart in March after noticing marijuana coming from his vehicle. The Goshen News says his passenger told police Rodriguez instructed her to store methamphetamine, which she said he had provided as part of a trade. Rodriguez denied knowing about the drugs. He received 25 years, including 15 in prison, and plans to appeal.

A man convicted of dealing methamphetamine has been sentenced in Elkhart County.  Anthony Blatz was arrested after police pursued a vehicle in 2021 and found meth, heroin and marijuana inside. The probable cause affidavit says Blatz claimed the drugs were his, including about 11 pounds of meth. According to The Goshen News, Blatz called his actions a poor decision. He was sentenced to 16 years, with eight years suspended to probation.

Football coach Bill Doba, who coached at Mishawaka and Goshen high schools before reaching the college ranks, has died at 85. Doba died after suffering a stroke more than a week ago. He began his coaching career in Indiana high school football in the 1970s before becoming an assistant at Indiana University and Purdue University. Doba eventually became head coach at Washington State University in 2003, where he became one of the most successful coaches in the program’s history.
